Rotary Mud Drilling
Rotary mud drilling utilizes three-cone
roller, poly crystalline diamond (PCD), or tungsten
impregnated drill bits to wear away at the cutting face. This is preferred
because of the speed of drilling and the relatively low cost when compared to
some other drilling types. This form of drilling is utilized by many different
sized rigs, from small man portable rigs right through to the largest oil rigs.
Rotating hollow drill pipes carry down bentonite, barite and polymer impregnated
drilling mud's to lubricate, cool, and clean the drilling bit. The mud travels
to the surface around the outside of the drilling rods. Examining rock chips
extracted from the mud is known as chip sampling.
Geophysical
logging is frequently employed to evaluate the existence of possible coal,
mineral or oil and gas deposits in the well hole. This is normally conducted
after drilling, by lowering measurement tools into the newly-drilled hole.
The rotary system of drilling was in general
use in Texas in the early 1900s. It is a modification of one invented by
Fauvelle in 1845, and used in the early years of the oil industry in some of the
oil-producing countries in Europe.
The rotary mud technologies have been adopted
from the oil industry and are commonplace in both the coal and mineral
exploration industries.
